The transition from medical school to residency is one of the most pivotal and challenging phases in medical education. For future anesthesiologists, this shift requires rapid adaptation to high-stakes clinical environments, new professional identities, and evolving responsibilities. This session will explore this complex and unique phase of medical education as learners consider their future specialty, prepare for this new identity, and adapt to new climates, cultures, and expectations. Drawing on national-level initiatives and insights from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), this session will highlight efforts to improve the transition to residency, including advancements in application processes, new resources for advising, competency-based innovations for residency readiness and early preparation. Attendees will gain an understanding of the complex ecosystem, including their role within it, to support a stronger transition for anesthesiology residents.
